Frédéric Cossard sometimes presents highly individual interpretations of grape varieties and terroirs in his VdF series that go beyond conventional understanding. In appellations such as Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, however, he produces classic wines that remain faithful to the character of the terroir and bring out its uniqueness to the fullest. (Even here, he uses egg-shaped cement tanks for élevage, of course to avoid masking the flavour of Pinot Noir with oak. This point differs from the traditional methods of Burgundy wine making.)
This Chambolle-Musigny 2022, in contrast to the extremely delicate 2021, shows richer, rounder fruit and a brighter overall impression on the palate. Both vintages express the typical character of Chambolle-Musigny, each through the lens of its own vintage personality.
Frédéric Cossard’s red wines are generally easy to enjoy from a young stage, and this Chambolle-Musigny is no exception. Both the 2021 and 2022 vintages are already approachable now. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that this Chambolle-Musigny is capricious: its taste can vary greatly from one day to the next. If you take care to bring the wine into good condition, choose an appropriate glass, and the roulette wheel stops on your number, it will offer an exceptional wine experience.
Frédéric Cossard established Domaine de Chassorney in 1996 after 10 years experience as a wine merchant, and today he is well recognized as top natural burgundy wine-maker who produces one of most beautiful wine.
Frédéric Cossard manages his vineyards by "homeopathic farming". This is one of the most advanced agriculture which is mixture of homeopathy and biodynamie, and it has been developed by Frédéric Cossard himself. He does not use SO2 and any chemical products in the cellar, so vinification is also totally natural.
As a result of high level of integration of sense, intelligence and technique, the wines are extremely pure, clean and straightly express the terroir. Wines are linked with movement of moon and planets. We can enjoy many different faces of wines at different occasion. We can feel the wines are alive in the bottle and in the glass, it is "Vin Vivant".
[Domaine de Chassorney] : Frédéric Cossard owns around 10ha. Saint Romain, Volnay, Savigny les Beaune and Hautes Cotes de Beaune.
[Frédéric Cossard] : Frédéric Cossard produces wines from buying grapes. He has established strong connection with growers through his previous job and he has the best discerning eyes to choose good grapes. He produces Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Beaune... all Burgundy appellations. Besides, Cossard produces wine from the grapes from other region such as Jura, Languedoc, Beaujolais...etc. Quality of négoce wines are same as his domaine wines.
[Les en hauts] : Les en hauts is a collaboration between Frédéric Cossard and Damien Coquelet. Damian Coquelet biodynamically cultivates 9ha of Morgon, Chiroubels, Beaujolais-Villages and Beaujolais, and works in the cellar in completely non-interventional manner. Whole-bunch fermentation by natural yeast, no temperature control, no SO2 added during vinification, zero or minimal SO2 at the bottling. The wine of Les en hauts is made in Morgon by the egg tank, and bottled and cellared in Cossard's place for the moment.
