RP91

This is among the finest Magdelaines of recent vintages. The 1995 possesses a saturated dark ruby/purple color, an earthy, subtly-oaked, black-cherry-scented nose, and concentrated, stylish, medium-bodied flavors that exhibit fine intensity and length. This is always a measured, restrained style of wine offering plenty of complexity and intensity. Although not the most obvious style of St.-Emilion, it is well-made, and, in the case of the 1995, capable of lasting 20+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

RP90

A terrific effort from Magdelaine, the 1995 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color, and a sweet, kirsch, and black cherry-scented nose with notes of sexy toast and vanillin. The wine is ripe, rich, and full-bodied, with outstanding intensity, purity, and equilibrium. It is a beautiful, harmonious, long, surprisingly seductive and accessible Magdelaine that will have many admirers. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020.

RP90

Firmly structured, tannic, but impressively concentrated, Magdelaine’s 1995 has a deep ruby color and a sweet nose of vanilla, kirsch liqueur, plums, and flowers. It is a medium-bodied, very pretty wine that is feminine, seductive, and well-balanced, although the tannins in the finish suggest it is not yet fully mature.

WS91

This lovely property situated on the famous limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion has for ages produced wines of unparalleled elegance.

Acquired by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1952, the château was elected to the rank of “Premier Grand Cru Classé” at the time of the 1958 classification.

The vineyard, with an average age of 30 years, is U-shaped, thus enjoying a favorable sunny exposure. The limestone soil gives the wine its remarkable equilibrium.

With meticulous care in the vineyard and a respectful vinification, the wine keeps its identity and expresses the unique terroir of the terrace of Saint-Émilion for the greatest pleasure of enlightened wine connoisseur.

Type of soil : 2/3 limestone - 1/3 clay and limestone

The Story : Château Bélair-Monange, Château Bélair and Château Magdelaine

Château Bélair-Monange traces its origins back to Roman times. Situated at the highest point of Saint-Émilion’s famed limestone plateau, it has long been considered one of the region’s very best crus. By 1850 it was ranked by Cocks & Feret as the leading wine of Saint-Émilion, a position it held well into the twentieth century.

Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased the iconic Château in 2008 and immediately undertook extensive renovations of the vineyard, winery, underground quarries, and château in order to restore the cru to its rightful historic status.

In 2012, Château Magdelaine, a contiguous Premier Grand Cru Classé acquired by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1952, was merged into Château Bélair-Monange. The name ‘Monange,’ in addition to its literal translation, ‘my angel,’ was the maiden name of Jean-Pierre Moueix’s mother, Anne-Adèle, the first Moueix woman to call Saint-Émilion her home.

Château Bélair-Monange combines the terroirs of the most privileged sites of Saint-Émilion. The limestone from the central plateau parcels offers freshness, minerality, and delicate, lingering aromatics, while the dense, blue clay of the slopes provides intensity, length, and a unique elegance to the wine.

Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix = JPM, is a Bordeaux négociant house founded by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1937, situated in Libourne. Jean-Pierre Moueix retired in 1978 and died in 2003. In 1991 his son Christian Moueix became president of JPM, while the grandson Edouard Moueix in the company since 2003.

JPM is famous and respected as a specialist of right bank among the wine-professionals. Exclusively or major part of top chateaux (ex : Lafleur, Gazin etc) are distributed by JPM. Besides, JPM owns and produces Trotanoy, La Fleur Petrus, Hosanna, Lagrange a Pomerol etc.

Especially, their old vintages have premium value. They have stored all the wines in the cellar in Libourne in perfect condition. Then wines are released after several years (sometimes after several decades). The direct allocation from JPM is considered as the best way to buy old vintages of right bank wines.

Chateau Petrus was managed by Christian Moueix since 1971, but he stated in 2008 his intention to distance himself from Petrus, limiting his role to that of a consultant.

Christian Moueix also owns the vineyards in Napa California, called Dominus Estate which is recognised as one of the top California wine.
