Information

The owner and the wine enthusiast Mr.Piero Palmucci bought land in Montalcino and started wine making in 1989. The first vintage was 1991. He produced 20 vintages and he passed winery to his friend in 2011. This 2005 vintage is precious bottle which was produced by golden tag of Gambelli and Palmucci.

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. Dark fruit, minerals, spices and a host of balsamic notes emerge from this powerful, textured Brunello. Poggio di Sotto’s 2005 is one of the most muscular, concentrated wines of the vintage.

The intensity of the fruit beautifully balances the tannins on the finish, where mint and flowers frame the close. This is a seductive, mysterious Brunello that provides endless fascination and discovery. Readers will want to put it on their short lists! Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

Proprietor Piero Palmucci is not only making some of the most brilliant wines in Montalcino, he is now inspiring a whole new generation of young growers with his non-interventionalist philosophy to viticulture and traditional approach to winemaking. A visit to these small cellars is always fascinating, particularly spending some time tasting through barrel samples cask by cask. This is a stunning set of wines readers will not want to miss. The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino may very well end up being the wine of the vintage, while the Rossos reach a level matched by very few other wines.

In 2011 Piero Palmucci sold the property to Claudio Tipa and promptly skipped town. Readers will recognize Tipa as the owner of Grattamacco and Colle Massari. The sale of the winery and the recent passing of long-time consultant Giulio Gambelli have created some uncertainty as to the direction of the wines in future vintages. Tipa told me he has every intention of keeping the house style intact. I am sure that is the case. But I also know that the Poggio di Sotto Rosso and Brunello are intensely personal wines, and even with the very best intentions, it will be very hard to maintain the soul that made them so compelling. Winemaker Federico Staderini, who worked alongside Gambelli beginning with 2010, is now in charge. I can only wish Claudio Tipa and Staderini the very best with filling the void left by Palmucci and Gambelli.

Attention :
Cork of POGGIO DI SOTTO wine is very tight and hard to uncork. This is normal. Please use leverage properly when you use wine-opener.
