Domaine Ponsot is a wine producer in Burgundy, France that produces white and red wine. They are best known for their Morey St.Denis Blanc 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants — the only premier cru Burgundy made entirely from Aligoté

Clive Coates, MW

Les Monts Luisants - Hitherto a terrain given over to white wine, this sector has been gradually taken over by the Pinot Noir since 1960. Ponsot is one of the few who have not replanted all their land in black grapes. The land is poor and rocky, with very little surface soil, and up here at above 300 metres, it is marginally cooler. The result is wine with a good acidity, so it keeps well, but with a certain leanness. The fruit flavours combine red currants and cherries, with a hint of damsons in some years. Recommended sourse: Ponsot (Morey-Saint-Denis)

This is one of the most individual domaines in the whole of Burgundy; its proach includes picking late, retaining up to 25 percent of the sterms, fermanting at high tempertures (but not cold-soaking), using new oak (now), using minimal sulphuring, not racking and bottling late. He uses a vertical press. A further curiosity is the white Monts Luisants. It used to be produced using 20 percent Chardonnay. This has now uprooted. So the origin is pure Aligote, and very old Aligote at that. It is unique. Overall, the result can not stunning- but not invariably.

Does it keep?

The answer is a strong yes, and even in vintages where nature has been less than kind. In the best years 20 years is a minimum: the 1989 is still an infant.

And what dose it taste like?

Well, it is not honeyed in the sense of a Meursault. Neither is it peachy in the sense of a Puligny. And of couse it is not oaky. The wine is very fresh, though except in the very lean vintages with no undue acidity. It is flowery, and the fruit flavours are understated and very subtle. Now having sampled the more recent pure Aligoté wines and compared then with what was made before, I agree with Laurent that 100 perecent Aligoté makes the best wine. There is a brilliant complexity and delicacy about today's Clos des Monts Luisants. It is delicious and it really is unique. And yet is is not prohibitively expensive. Ponsot does not sell wines direct to private consumers.

A ripe, citrusy and highly layered nose exudes the classic spiciness unique to Aligoté. The rich, full-bodied and concentrated flavors possess ample mid-palate fat and dry extract that buffers the firm acidity that shapes the gorgeously long finish. Excellent and this should be accessible relatively early by the standards of this wine yet successfully hold for years to come.

Laurent Ponsot once told me that this wine virtually never goes through malo and the only years that it has are 1959 and 1982. However, in 2007 it did go through its malo. Note that the last time this wine was 100% Aligoté was in 1964. Ponsot also explained that 2007 will be the last vintage in which he will use natural cork. Effective with the 2008 vintage, he will follow the footsteps of Comte Senard and adopt the Italian composite cork from Guala. The cork, called Guala Seal, is designed to "breathe" in the sense that the amount of oxygen ingress desired can be programmed into the cork. The obvious intent is to mimic the oxygen diffusion of a natural cork though how well it will work over time of course remains to be seen.(Burghound)
