In Burgundy, there are several 1er Crus that rival or even surpass Grand Crus, and knowledgeable enthusiasts diligently collect such wines. This 1er Cru Les Monts Luisants is one of those wines. The lieu-dit “Monts Luisants” forms part of the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche and is adjacent to the Grand Cru Latricières-Chambertin. It is easy for anyone to imagine that this is an excellent location. The genius judge of vineyards, Frédéric Cossard has been purchasing grapes from this vineyard for many years, and those grapes are crafted into wine with a genius winemaking sensibility. This is one of the highlights of his series of red wines from Côte de Nuits, such as Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny.
|
This wine is made from grapes from the lieu-dit Voitte, located on the lower part of the slopes extending toward the 1er Cru Clavoillon in the center of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. Depending on the vintage, the label may indicate the name Voitte, but in 2022, since a small amount of grapes from the 1er Cru La Garenne was blended in, the label simply states Puligny-Montrachet. The grapes were harvested early to preserve acidity, which proved effective, resulting in a wine with considerable volume that is well balanced without any heaviness or dullness. Indeed, both the red and white wines of 2022 are outstanding. The vinification and aging are carried out in egg-shaped concrete tanks introduced after the removal of wooden barrels, expressing pure fruit flavors and aromas.
|
The Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Damodes, born from old vines averaging over 60 years of age, planted on 0.3 hectares, has long been crafted by Frédéric Cossard. The lieu-dit Les Damodes is adjacent to Aux Boudots and lies on the border with Vosne-Romanée, very close to the golden zone that stretches from Aux Malconsorts to La Tâche. The lieu-dit is composed of both 1er Cru and Village classifications. The vinification and aging carried out in egg-shaped concrete tanks have brought out the pure fruit flavors and the delicate expression of the terroir with even greater clarity. Like Vosne-Romanée and Morey-Saint-Denis, it is a popular label forming part of Frédéric Cossard’s Côte de Nuits red wine series.

From the lieu-dit Les Gollardes, located in the northwest part of the appellation. Frédéric Cossard took over this plot from a friend and has been managing it since 2007. The vineyard area is a mere 0.43 hectares, with an average vine age of over 60 years. Aurélien Verdet completed the harvest of Pinot Noir in this lieu-dit in 2022. It was the latest harvest for red wines.
This cuvée is particularly notable for its differences from Frédéric Cossard's style, being thicker and juicy. The wine is elegant, and like Saint Romain Sous Roche and Volnay, it also benefits from long-term aging potential. The wine undergoes 100% whole-cluster fermentation with semi-carbonic maceration in a stainless steel tank. The aging process is conducted in traditional old pièces (228-liter barrels), resulting in a flawless, classic Burgundy.
|
Jean-François Ganevat, a friend of Frédéric's from Jura, helped him find a source of high-quality grapes. Frédéric Cossard treated those healthy grapes using his manner and produced vivid wines. "Feel Good" is made from Savagnin. The label cannot include "Savagnin" if the wine was vinified outside of Jura, even if it is classified as Vin de France. Therefore, Frédéric named the wine "Feel Good", using the initials F for Fred and G for Ganevat. The wine is made from grapes from vines over 50 years old. It undergoes carbonic maceration using special tank equipment for nine months.

Frédéric Cossard established Domaine de Chassorney in 1996 and spent 15 years perfecting this 1.4-hectare vineyard, gradually increasing its precision and cultivating it into one of the finest in Burgundy. After a three-year transition period, Aurélien Verdet took over the vineyard in 2022. The old vines, with an average age of over 70 years, produce wines that are like pure essences.
The difference from Frédéric Cossard is that the aging process, which was previously done in egg tanks and qvevris (2018 - 2021), has been switched back to barrels (old barrels), a method that Cossard also used until 2017. Given that Aurélien Verdet is known for crafting restrained and elegant wines, it seems that the merits of Sous Roche are being more directly highlighted as an authentic Burgundy wine. What is clear is the wine's potential for long-term aging.

[Mature Bottle Release] Clos de la Bergerie inherits same style of Coulee de Serrant as well as Vieux Clos. Contains Botrytis too. Clos de la Bergerie is the richest among three cuvees with honey-like stickiness. Gras coats your mouth, seductively sweet, and long finish. This is the wine for pleasure.
|
[Mature Bottles Release] Les Vieux Clos inherits same style of Coulee de Serrant as well as Clos de la Bergerie. Contains Botrytis too. However Vieux Clos is not merely an entry level of Nicolas Joly's wine. Every three cuvees have different characters and size, yet same concentration. Les Vieux Clos has slightly larger-meshed texture than Coulee and its easier to match wide range of cuisines.

This is also different from the Super Pink of previous years. This must be the character of the 2022 vintage! The color is pale, but it's so dense that you can feel the viscosity. It has a pleasant bitterness like pink grapefruit, and also a flavor like peach. The sweetness of ripe fruit, which becomes especially noticeable in the latter half, blends together into a feeling of bliss, like a tropical cocktail. In the South of France, the Cinsault grape variety is often used for rosé wine, but this is the first time we've had a Cinsault like this.

Frédéric Cossard has a new wine called Cuvée C, made from 100% Carignan. Southern French wines are often made by blending grapes with distinct personalities, such as Carignan, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Syrah. However, leave it to Frédéric Cossard, originally from Burgundy, to create an incredibly delicious wine with 100% Carignan! It's juicy, smooth, and you can even sense a delicate touch. It's such a vibrant wine. In 2022, which saw record-breaking drought and heat waves, the grapes suffered from extreme water shortage until just before the harvest. However, rain fell right before the harvest, revitalizing the grapes and leading to a very successful harvest.
|
The label has changed, and the Version Sud has emerged with a completely different taste than last year. In 2022, which saw record drought and intense heat, the grapes suffered from extreme water shortage until right before harvest. The juice was concentrated, resulting in a powerful wine. However, this smoothness enhances its drinkability, and there is no trace of the dullness often found in ordinary Southern French wines.

Bain de Bulles Guy Wurtz (= Bath of bubbles, Gewurztraminer). It's advertised as a Pet Nat, but currently has no bubbles. Maybe just a slight tingle on the tongue. To be clear, this is not a sparkling wine at this time. However, whether it has bubbles or not doesn't really matter, the richness of the juice and the acidity are superb. We thought it might be low alcohol, but it's a proper 12.5%. We didn't feel the alcohol at all. The grapes are Gewurztraminer from Alsace. This is delicious.

Bain de Bulles (= Bath of bubbles). This sparkling wine is made from Muscat grapes in Alsace and has a rich fruitiness paired with vibrant acidity. Chilling it close to 0 degrees makes it very refreshing! Although it is not recommended for those who have been educated to consider V.A. (volatile acid) in wine as a defect, there is a dedicated fan base for wines where V.A. is expressed in a moderate and exquisite manner, positively enhancing the wine.
|
[Lot 2021] This Pet-Nat is made from old vines of Aligote in Puligny-Montrachet. It has a crisp, lemony flavor with refreshing bubbles. By the way, "Chassornade" is a word coined by Frédéric Cossard, combining "Chassorney" and "Lemonade". Yes, he wanted to make a Pet-Nat that tastes like lemonade! It's cloudy because it was released without disgorgement.
|
[Lot 2020] Like other wines, it is produced every year, and the taste varies each time; however, there is no vintage labeling, and the same design label is used each year, making it hard to distinguish between them. There seems to be an issue with inventory data management or possibly a mistake in the warehouse, as two lots from the 2020 and 2021 vintages exist. This wine was not particularly intended for aging, so the practice was to sell out one lot before moving on to the next. However, tasting both wines side by side was quite interesting. The Aligoté from Puligny-Montrachet shows a stark difference between the 2020 and 2021 vintages. Indeed, this is a reasonable observation given the vintage differences between 2020 and 2021 in Burgundy.

[Mature Bottle Release] Bigotes is a great natural wine classic, made from Chardonnay from the Puligny-Montrachet area, near Volnay and Pommard. The age of the vines is 55 years. Frederic Cossard produces wine exclusively from old vines. The fruit and mineral characteristics are well-balanced at a high level. The 2020 vintage is well matured today; it's the perfect time to uncork.
Immediately after opening, it emits bouquet and has quite a soft impression, but as time passes, it gains freshness and lively tension. People often describe Cossard's wines as Vin Vivant, and indeed, this Bigotes 2020 truly embodies that.
|
[Mature Bottle Release] Saint-Romain is Cossard's home ground. This is a thrilling signature wine from Frédéric Cossard that puzzles wine critics and sommeliers. It deviates from the typical Burgundy Chardonnay. Combe Bazin belongs to the same geological stratum as Puligny-Montrachet.
After more than five years of bottle aging, the fruit, acidity, and minerality that were in explosive balance immediately after bottling are now beautifully integrated, yet the tension remains unusually high. In a typical wine tasting, we don't think this would be identified as a Burgundy Chardonnay. This nature is the same as in 2017, but 2018 is richer and bigger than 2017.
|
[Mature Bottle Release] In 2018, the yield was sufficient, allowing for the production of Puligny-Montrachet solely from the Lieu-dit "Voitte." The label also indicates Voitte. (In years with insufficient yield, it is blended with wines from other Lieu-dits and labeled simply as Puligny-Montrachet.)
Voitte is classified as a village appellation but is a hidden treasure vineyard located near Les Pucelles and Clavaillon. While Premier Cru wines are valued for their intricacy and delicate expression, Voitte excels in fruit richness and concentration. Given that this is a 2018 vintage crafted by Frederic Cossard, expectations are high, but those expectations will not be disappointed. Cossard's white wines are difficult to estimate the peak drinking window, but enjoying a bottle now is not a bad idea.
